Mostly all that was left were magazines, knitting and crochet patterns, and the John Marshall dye workshop supplies. We talked about what to do with the magazines, etc and are suggesting that I bring a stock of mags to each of the next few meetings and we disperse them. I created a free account for us on librarything.com and started inputting the titles from the books we received from Mary Parker plus one book I have checked out. You can look at the list here: http://my.librarything.com/catalog/DelOroGuild Janice will be getting together with Rose to pick up the rest of the books and videos. We will get them all inputted to this list and store them in my guest room for now. You can call me or email me to bring books to the meeting as soon as we get them organized.
At the planning meeting, we also talked about the disposition of the videos, in light of the fact that most folks have DVD players now. We voted that if we cannot secure a DVD copy, we will have the video converted to a DVD, so that we can still make use of the material.

Tentative schedule for 2008-2009 - at the August planning meeting, we thought it would be fun to share some of the skills we learned at the conference, so those offerings are scattered throughout the year. I recorded all the topics, but am lacking some of the teachers .... ooops ... if you recognize what you volunteered to do, pls let me know.

September 17, Old General Store, Drytown: Until we determine a location for the early bird dinner, we will meet at 5 p.m. at the Old Well in Drytown for dinner on 9/17. We hear they have fabulous pies. Some other options are the bar in Drytown (do they serve food?), or La Colina in Plymouth. We ate there after the fair set up and had an excellent meal at a good price. The program for September will be offered by Stephenie and it will be back-to-front warping. I gotta see it to get it .....

October 4 - Farmers Market in Sutter Creek - 8 to 11 a.m. -- In celebration of National Spinning and Weaving Week, we will have an informal spin-in and weave-in. The planned sheep-t0-shawl with Hangtown will not happen as they are committed elsewhere that day. Bring your wheel or loom, a chair and have a good time!

October 18 - Historic Jackson Heritage Days - 10 - 5 On Main Street - same as last year -- we can sell stuff, and we will demonstrate spinning and weaving. We found some cardboard looms in the storage cabinet that we can prewarp and show the kiddies, young and old, how to weave. Bring your wheel or loom, handcards, a chair. We had lots of fun last year, even when the horsewagon almost collided with us.

October 22 - meeting at Drytown - Needlefelted gremlins (who volunteered to lead this? Laura? I forgot to write it down)

November 19 - meeting at Drytown - Acorn Fairies (Rose?)
December 13, Saturday, 11 a.m. -- Holiday Potluck and gift exchange at Wendy's

January 21 - meeting at Drytown - knitting and weaving yarns - Stephenie

February 18 - meeting at Drytown - linen spinning - Rose and Wnedy

March 18 - meeting at Drytown - Copper weaving (Karn and Kathy Mc) (Do we need supplies? from where?)

April 15 - meeting at Drytown - gossamer felt - Rose and Pat

May 20 - meeting at Drytown - Sara Lamb's knotted pile bags & new book on the rigid heddle, Slot & Eye (who? ) ; or Fab 4 (Cathy)

June 17 - meeting at Drytown - planning for the fair.

NEW LOCATION FOR MEETINGS: I hope that by now all of you have heard that Roseann at the Old General Store in Drytown has generously offered her classroom area for our monthly meetings. The various times will still be the same: early bird dinner at 5 p.m. (at the Old Well for September), 6:00 early birds at the store to work on projects or problem solve; meeting at 7 with short business and then the program.

Winter Workshop/retreat ideas for this year:
We have some money in the bank and the discussion at the planning meeting was how to use it. Suggestion was also offered that we give a discount to members who volunteer at a certain number of events during the year (nothing determined on that).

We haven't had a formal workshop in a couple years, so we came up with the following ideas: Celia Quinn for spinning; Judith MacKenzie McCuin; Darlene Hayes, Sara Lamb for rigid heddle; Nancy Bush for knitting; a dye workshop.
We also thought it would be super duper fun if we actually made it a retreat and went somewhere for the weekend to have this workshop. Ideas floated for location: The St George Hotel or Volcano Union Inn in Volcano; the Hanford House; Asilomar at Monterey; Lodestar in Wilseyville (http://www.uccr.org/lodestar.htm ), Days Inn Sutter Creek (has meeting rooms)

This week, I also looked thru the CNCH conference book for some ideas with teachers not too far away:
Molly Freeman (Sacramento) - weaving surface design; warp painting; garments from woven goods
Mary Hettmansperger (Indiana) - woven, wire, and looped jewely and miniature metal books (a couple of guild members took her classes and really seemed to enjoy them -- she may jump at the chance to come to CA in the winter)
Roberta Lowes (Tacoma, WA) - collaged garments, working with new fibers (bamboo, tencel etc), using up your stash of special yarns in weaving
Robyn Spady - (Bremerton, WA) - versatility in 4 harness looms; jewelry making for fiber artists
Margaret Tyler (Costa Mesa, CA) - spinning techniques (a number of folks around the table at Wendy's were looking for more spinning help)
Patsy Zawistoski (Illinois) - specialty spinning - flax, cotton, silk, fine wool yarns, high tech fibers
hire Stephenie to teach wherever we decide to stay, and support our local resources

Some other ideas for a place to stay: rent a place at Kirkwood or Sorenson's in Hope Valley, rent the Polar Bear cottage at Silver Lake (only accommodates 6, tho) http://www.kitcarsonlodge.com/ ; that house you rent at Dillon Beach? ; Point Montara Lighthouse between Half Moon Bay and SF http://www.norcalhostels.org/montara/ -- it is a hostel & lighthouse with a large meeting room, right on the cliff -- very cool -- I have stayed there a number of times and it is inexpensive.

I have stayed at Lodestar -- lots of accommodation options and they do meals; Not sure on the cost -- it was quite a few years ago.

I have stayed at Pt Montara with both adults and 4H kids -- the accommodations are dormitory-style and we would do our own meals. There are also a number of restaurants and a grocery nearby and it is an easy hop-skip-jump up to the city. They have a large meeting room in the building that housed the fog horn, two large kitchens, dining areas, and a large living room with a wood stove. It is quite nearby the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve (tidepools). It takes about 3 hours door to door from my house. We would need to make reservations pretty far ahead for winter -- like within the next month.

Lots of things to think about! Let's discuss the workshop ideas at the September meeting so we can get rollling with reservations.

CNCH Alternative Conference - Sonoma - Late April -- Karn, Kathy MC and I will be attending the next conference meeting in Sonoma in late September and should have lots of good info for you for the October meeting.

Have a great weekend,
Cathy

looms and fiber in Volcano

A woman in Volcano who is downsizing contacted Karn and I about some looms, fiber and spinning wheel. She has a 4 shaft large floor loom, about 48"; a small 8 shaft table loom that looks like a Dorothy, but no name plate; an Ashford spinning wheel (Elizabeth?); a folding loom sized like a Baby Wolf, but name branded Purrington; about 200 books; and boxes and bags of yarn, both weft and warp. I took some pictures which I will post below. I suggested to her that she come up with a date for a weavers yard sale and let me know and I will pass along to all of you. I just realized I did not get a picture of the wheel, but here's the rest:

Sheep to Shawl, continued continued!

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5204751346684238146" style="FLOAT: left; If you need a carpool connection, let me know and I will try to connect you. If you have an item for the booth, get it to Kathy Mc ASAP. She will need the following information for the cards: First, last name, item name, technique, description. The following people have signed up for booth time: Stephenie, Laura, Cathy KB, Wendy, Carol.

SHEEP TO SHAWL
Sacramento County Fair's Sheep-to-Shawl contest is May 24. Stephenie is again judging this year, so any conversations regarding this event will be done off line. If you want to be part of the team, please contact me ASAP. So far, we have Laura, Pat, Wendy, Carol, Cathy KB, possibly Kathy Mc, with Janice Johnson as an alternate. The team consists of 3 spinners, 1 plyer, 1 weaver, 1 gofer.

HOLIDAY GIFT EXCHANGE
At the April meeting, we agreed to the idea of exchanging a word. This can be any one word that means something to you -- a color, a place, a verb or action word, an emotion. Using the word as inspiration, the gifter will create a fiber-related gift for the giftee. We usually start this gift exchange in September, but lately that has not been enough time so we will be doing starting this exchange at the June meeting. At the April meeting, we agreed to have the giftee identified along with their word, in order to help the gift maker. So bring your special word to the June meeting on a card with your name, also. I will have envelopes for the cards. Make sense?

HOSPICE
We agreed to donate the shawl from the Sac County Fair to Hospice again this year for their auction. If anyone else wishes to donate an item, contact Hospice ASAP.

AMADOR COUNTY FAIR - THEME: "BARNYARD MARDI GRAS - 70 YEARS OF FAMILY FUN"
We had some preliminary discussions at the April meeting and came up with the following ideas. More discussion is the May and finalize at June meeting:
The educational component will be the name drafts
We will recycle the paper mache rock from the CNCH conference and it will go in the back right corner of the booth
Kathy Mc has full-sized donkey head pictures and will put the cotton halter on it
Zelda will have a headdress of feathers (peacock or?) and a mask; Laura has a pink shawl and Kathy Mc has a skirt for her.
We will need mardi gras beads and felt beads
We need some animals to create a barnyard parade behind Zelda. Cathy KB has a large goat puppet and mask.
MAY MEETING
Janice will present the program on flower pounding. Sounds like fun!! Neither Kathy Mc nor myself will be at the May meeting. Times are the usual -- 5 p.m. early dinner at Jose's; 6 p.m. early birds at the senior center; 7 p.m. meeting.

ELECTIONS
The following nominations were made and voting will occur at the May meeting:
PRESIDENT: open
VICE PRESIDENT: Kathy Mc
CO-SECRETARIES: Pat M and Laura
TREASURER: Wendy
LIBRARY: Janice

DUES
Dues were due at the April meeting, $20 per year.

See EWE at conference,
Cathy

Stephenie's breakfast bars

Cathy,

I brought some breakfast bars to the dye seminar last weekend and would like to share the easy recipe. Using thrums, bits of ribbon and lace, and fabric scraps Laura creates scrap baskets in a variety of sizes and shapes.

Karn hosted a Cheap Sheep Therapy Session/Open House for her new abode yesterday. We had fun schmoozing with the donkeys (Tommy has an awesome voice!), the horses, the dogs and checking out the new house. We sat around the table eating and sharing some great stories. Did you know that Pat's mom was an extra in the movie, Into the Wild?? Look for the red dress! We also talked about the annual holiday gift exchange and came up with the following idea: Choose a word -- just one word -- that means something to you. It can be a verb, a noun, adjective, name -- sky's the limit. This word will be the inspiration for the gift maker. We will do the exchange at the June meeting: will write your word on a card and put it in a brown paper bag. For snowbird Joanne -- I know you will be gone by then, but get me your word in a sealed envelope. Kim -- you want to play, too? I know this is earlier than usual, but it seems that fall is a really busy time for all of us and I thought this might give us a little more time.

March Cheap Sheep-- Do we want one to work on our name draft projects? Anyone want to host? It is generally on a Saturday or Sunday starting at 11 or 12 or 1 and people bring a food dish to share.

March 18 guild meeting -- Prep for the John Marshall pigment dye event in April. Rose has soy beans for us.

April Cheap Sheep -- April 5 - 6 at Kathy Mc's -- continue our exploration of John Marshall's pigment dye techniques.

Sacramento County Fair Wool Show, May 24, Cal Expo -- we voted to participate in the sheep to shawl again this year. We will get Romney from Mendenhall again. We have some leftover from last year that has been dyed purples with glitz. Glitz can be in either the warp or weft or both. Stephenie will probably judge again this year, so we need to exclude her from any of the planning discussions. We will need a team of 6 plus 1 alternate (3 spinners, 1 plyer, 1 weaver, 1 go-fer). The alternate needs to be ready to go at the last minute in case someone gets sick or has an emergency.

A-Pal's Whiskers and Wine event, June -- We voted to donate the lead ropes we created at the fair. Janice also donated one of her hand knitted candy hats and Laura is donating one of her quilt creations. If you wish to donate, contact Susan at the Feed Barn.

CNCH conference update, May 4-6, Doubletree Hotel in Sac -- Entries for the judged galleries must be submitted WITH A PHOTO by 4/1. The actual entry goes in later. We are sharing a booth with the other Area 2 guilds. The theme is "Pioneer to Pioneering New Fibers". It is 10 x 16 and will have Signature Rock created by Kathy Mc in one corner with 1 gallon holes for plants that can be used for fiber or dye. I am starting as many as I can, but check out your garden for some plants we can borrow for the weekend. Kathy Mc has made a sign that says "Poet Lariat" and will be writing one of her wonderful poems outlining the steps to rope making. We will be booth sitting from 12 - 4 on Sunday, with a rope making demo from 2:30 - 3 that same day in the booth. Our guild has committed to submit at least 5 items for the booth (unjudged) and these need to be made from plant fibers (cotton, linen, bamboo, soy, ingeo, etc). Using your name draft for inspiration, think about YOUR signature. Be sure to get your registration in soon -- rates will go up soon.

CNCH conference cancellations -- two seminars have been cancelled: Understanding Color and Designing and Constructing a Collage Garment. One post conference workshop has also been cancelled: Miniature Metal Books and Journals.

previous post clarification

The preceding post was a cut-n-paste from Kathy Mc's email.

More details on conference and name drafts

Area 2 Leaves Its Signature
Pioneer to Pioneering New Fibers

The booth size is 10’ by 16’.

A part of Independence Rock will be wedged into the right corner, extending 4’ up the right side and 6’ across the back wall.

There will be spaces made to hold 1 gallon pots displaying some of the plants used for fiber (both woven and basketry) and dyes. Some suggestions were: bamboo, cotton, linen(flax), ramie, corn, soy, redbud, maidenhair fern, madder, and marigold.

There will be a “tree” to help us exhibit items. A chunk of my downed oak stuffed into a pot with quickcrete will be provided.

Some wooden packing crates, a barrel, and …. will set the scene for “overnight stop” at Independence Rock. Our items might be things that were brought along the California Trail as they headed for the west.

There will be a table that will be used for the demonstrations. This will also have a 20” by 24” foam core display board that will give info about our demonstration. (Our demo is rope making)

The items to be displayed in this exhibit need to be woven of PLANT materials, since that is the focus for our area. That means our name drafts in cotton, linen, ramie, bamboo….. You get the idea.

Name drafts are great or whatever you feel that your “signature work” is. Just weave in a PLANT fiber for this exhibit.

Remember this is an area 2 exhibit. Is not a juried exhibit! There are 4 guilds working on this. If each guild produces at least 6 items for this exhibit, we will be in great shape. You can always exhibit in one of the many galleries.

All items must have a 3” by 5” index card that contains the weaver’s name, the guild, a description (yarn/fiber, size, technique) This will be printed in 18 point/Times so that all cards will have continuity.

We will set up Friday beginning at 8 am, for those who can make it.

Our demonstration time is Sunday from 2:30 – 3:00. Our title is “Poet Lariat.” (rope making)
Other demos are Saturday 11 – 11:30 “Dyeing on the Trail.” (plant dyes) Fresno
Saturday 12 – 12:30 “When Iris Leaves Home” (paper making
with iris) Golden Valley

We will be booth sitting Sunday from 12 to 4. This will include our demonstration time. The plan is to create something using the name draft that can be displayed in Area 2 Guild's booth. Our booth focus is on plants and textiles: either plants and textiles used by the pioneers or plants (think hemp, woad, linen) or textiles currently being pioneered, such as seasilk, bamboo, tencel and more.

The name draft does not have to be your name; it can be a word or phrase that has meaning for you in your art. Unless you weave the "code" into the edge of the item, you will not actually see the name or word woven there, but if the code is there, a good code-breaker will be able to solve it!

As far items, the sky is the limit! A possible bag, scarf, towel, mat -- just keep the item fairly small because our booth is only 10 x 10 and we are sharing with three other guilds and ..... a scale model of Inscription Rock created by Kathy Mc.

The sample tie up Stephenie gave us is for a 4 harness loom with 2/2 twill overshot structure. I will scan the tie up page from the handout and email it separately.

Here are some links to get you started:
http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/webdocs/gre_cd1.pdf

http://www.interweave.com/weave/projects_articles/name_drafting.pdf

Happy weaving,
Cathy

January News for Ewes

Next meeting: February 19 at the Senior Center. Hope you had a great holiday!

Many thanks to Wendy Brown for hosting our annual holiday potluck at her home in December. We all had a great time eating, sharing, and exchanging our coffee mug or recipe gifts. What a creative bunch we are! We said a tentative farewell to Kim Slone, who may be on her way to her new home in Canada by the January meeting.

The January meeting will be held on Tuesday, the 15th at the Senior Center in Jackson. For anyone who is able, we gather for a quick supper at Jose's at 5, then the building opens at 6 for early birds, and the regular meeting will commence at 7 p.m. This month, Stephenie Gaustad will be continuing her instruction on name drafts in preparation for our part of the annual conference.

Keep warm as these next storms pass through,

Cathy

Welcome!

Welcome to the Del Oro Spinners and Weavers Guild blog!

Del Oro Spinners and Weavers Guild meets in Jackson, California in the heart of the Motherlode.
